According to nhl.com, the contract is valid from next season onwards.

In addition, he has written into the contract that he will be exempt from being traded during the first three years and that he will be able to choose himself among 15 teams he wants to go to during the last three years of the contract, writes Aftonbladet.

It feels really cool to "sign" here. Now I'm loaded on staying and trying to win with this group. As soon as we came here, I and my family felt that we wanted to be here, says Pettersson to the newspaper.

The 28-year-old defenseman came from Pittsburgh to his new club on Friday and has since managed to play two matches.

"In just a couple of matches, Marcus has already shown us exactly the kind of leadership, balance, and character we're looking for", says Vancouver's Swedish general manager Patrik Allvin, in a press release.
