After 90 minutes, the score was 2–2. The Merseyside club's both goals came from new acquisitions.

Hugo Ekitike gave them the lead already in the fourth minute when he turned up, drove the ball forward and then shot into goal. A quarter later, Jeremie Frimpong was responsible for a fine lob over Dean Henderson in the Palace goal.

Crystal Palace's two equalizers were made by Jean-Philippe Mateta on a penalty and Ismaila Sarr, when he was unmarked and received the ball in depth and could shoot into the post.

In the Community Shield, no extra time is played, so penalties were waiting directly after the final signal.

Big Liverpool stars like Mohamed Salah and Alexis Mac Allister missed their penalties. Crystal Palace won the penalty shootout 3–2.

Prior to the Community Shield match, a minute of silence was to be held to pay tribute to the deceased Liverpool player Diogo Jota.

But the tribute was interrupted by referee Chris Kavanagh after it had been noisy in the stands. Afterward, boos were heard from the audience.

In the 20th minute, Liverpool supporters began to applaud as a tribute to Jota, who wore number 20 on the team.

Diogo Jota died in a car accident in Spain in early July.

The Community Shield is played annually between the winner of the Premier League (Liverpool) and the winner of the FA Cup (Crystal Palace).
