The krona: questions and answers

Why is the Swedish krona weak or strong?

Sweden is a small open economy, so the krona moves with the world’s appetite for risk: when markets are nervous, investors tend to sell it for the euro, the dollar or the Swiss franc, and when they calm down it tends to recover. Interest rates matter too: when the Riksbank’s policy rate is low compared with the European Central Bank’s or the Federal Reserve’s, holding kronor pays less, which weighs on the currency. Growth, inflation and trade shape the longer trend.

When does the Riksbank decide on interest rates?

The Riksbank’s Executive Board makes eight monetary policy decisions a year, on dates it publishes in advance. Each decision is published at 09:30 Swedish time, and a new policy rate usually takes effect about a week later, on a Wednesday. This page shows the rate in effect, so a change appears here on the day it applies.

How do I pay in Sweden?

Cards are taken almost everywhere, and contactless card or phone payments are the norm; many shops, cafés and city buses take no cash at all. Swish, the payment app Swedes use with each other and at markets, needs a Swedish bank account and a personnummer, so visitors usually cannot use it. Cash is still legal tender, but it is rarely used.

Should I exchange money before travelling to Sweden?

Usually not. A debit or credit card without foreign transaction fees gives you a rate close to the mid-rates on this page, while exchange offices often add a margin of several per cent. When a card terminal or cash machine offers to charge you in your own currency, decline and pay in kronor: that service, dynamic currency conversion, uses the seller’s own rate, which is usually worse.

What does “indicative” mean?

The rates here are mid-rates, halfway between the buying and selling prices on the currency market, which Sveriges riksbank publishes once every bank day in the late afternoon. Banks, card issuers and exchange offices add their own margin, so the rate you get when you buy or sell is a little worse. The rates are for information and comparison, not for transactions.
