The announcement that Jordan is ready to receive 2,000 sick children from Gaza comes after Donald Trump's increased demands that countries in the Middle East take in refugees from Gaza – with proposals to permanently relocate Gazans to new home countries.
Jordan has taken in more than two million Palestinian refugees, but has opposed American proposals for the refugees to settle permanently in neighboring countries – which King Abdullah remains opposed to, he writes on X after his meeting with Trump at the White House.
"I reiterated Jordan's unwavering stance that Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank should not be relocated. It is a unified Arab stance", he writes and continues:
"Rebuilding Gaza without forcibly relocating Palestinians and addressing the dire humanitarian situation should be everyone's priority."
He writes further that a two-state solution is the only way to achieve lasting stability in the region and that it requires leadership from the USA, which he hopes Trump can provide according to the X post. "President Trump is a man of peace", writes Abdullah.
Prior to the meeting, Trump said he was determined to push for the proposal to forcibly relocate Gazans.
I think he's going to go along with it, and I think other countries will too. They're good-hearted, Trump told reporters when asked how he could convince Abdullah to take in Palestinian refugees.
