Germany currently sees no prerequisites for recognition of a Palestinian state, Merz states according to the news agency EFE.

What has happened in recent days does not change our stance, he says in an appearance with Canada's Prime Minister Mark Carney, who is visiting Berlin.

In late July, a group of Western countries announced that they intend to recognize the state of Palestine at the UN General Assembly in September. Among them are Finland, Portugal, Australia, New Zealand and Canada.

Germany's Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said at the same time that the process towards recognition of a Palestinian state "must begin now".
