Brazil's former president Jair Bolsonaro is placed under around-the-clock surveillance ahead of the announcement of the verdict in the high-profile trial against him.

A judge in the country's highest court considers him a flight risk and has decided on surveillance.

The decision comes after the prosecutor pointed out that Bolsonaro last year planned an escape to Argentina, to seek asylum there with President Javier Milei.

Bolsonaro has been under house arrest since before, awaiting the verdict in the trial where he is accused of having attempted to stage a coup to be able to retain power after the presidential election in 2022.

If he is convicted, he risks imprisonment for up to 40 years.

Bolsonaro himself claims that the allegations against him are politically motivated. He has received support from US President Donald Trump, who calls it all a "witch hunt".
