It was almost routine for the 102-year-old Kokichi Akuzawa when he climbed Japan's sacred mountain Fuji, and set a record.

I have been there and seen the view many times, it was nothing special, says Akuzawa.

But the feat of being the oldest person to have climbed the mountain is confirmed as a record by the Guinness record book.

The mountain climbing of the active stratovolcano was carried out in early August, and a fellow climber was his grandson who is a nurse. The support to reach the top at 3,776 meters above sea level was helpful, as Akuzawa has heart problems.

Moreover, altitude sickness was about to stop him, but after three days of climbing he reached the top – and revisited the view he last saw six years ago, when 96 years old.

I reached the top then too, says Akuzawa – who however answers firmly to the question of whether he will do it again:

No.
