UN has established a council that will help member countries in matters of artificial intelligence. The General Assembly's decision comes after several countries have stated that they are concerned about how the new technology can threaten democracy and human rights.

The council will consist of 40 experts who will facilitate a dialogue on AI between different countries.

In addition, the UN will hold an annual meeting where countries will discuss cooperation between states and AI companies and where global UN-led development goals in the technology will be developed. The first meeting will be held in Geneva next year.

The UN Secretary-General António Guterres has previously appealed for AI to be regulated and reviewed by a UN body, roughly like the UN body IAEA reviews nuclear energy issues.
