Donald Trump wants to see the death penalty for all murders committed in the capital Washington DC. This was stated by the President of the United States during a government meeting in front of a gathered press corps.
If someone kills someone else in the capital, we will demand the death penalty. It's a very strong preventive measure and everyone who hears about it agrees, said Trump.
The statement comes after Trump two weeks ago placed Washington's police force under federal control and sent in the national guard to "stop the bloodshed". On Sunday, the national guard began carrying weapons when they patrolled the city.
According to Trump, crime has worsened in the city, but statistics show that violent crimes have decreased in recent years.
Washington DC abolished the death penalty in 1981.
