The Swiss downhill specialist Niels Hintermann will miss the entire coming season after being diagnosed with lymph node cancer.
The 29-year-old, who has three individual victories in the World Cup, informed about the disease at a press conference on Wednesday.
It was after a training camp in South America recently that Hintermann noticed a lump on his neck. After being examined, cancer tumors were found in his neck and just below the collarbone.
He will now begin treatment, which is expected to last for around six months, according to the Swiss Ski Association.
"If everything goes according to plan, we hope that Niels will be back with full strength for the 2025-26 season," says the Swiss national team doctor Walter Frey.
