Already after 22 minutes and at a disadvantage of 0–5, Sinner threw in the towel and gave up the final against the world's second, Carlos Alcaraz, in Cincinnati Open on Monday evening. Exactly why Sinner could not continue playing is unclear, but it has been reported that it was due to illness.
On Sunday, the singles tournament starts in the US Open, but already on Tuesday, it is planned that Sinner will play with the Czech Katerina Siniakova in mixed doubles in the Grand Slam tournament in New York.
"I am ready to fight. Now I will rest for a couple of days, then it's back to training again and hopefully we are ready then", said Sinner in a statement after Monday evening's interrupted final.
Sinner said nothing in his statement about his possible participation in the mixed doubles tournament, which in its new format will be decided on Tuesday and Wednesday.
"The US Open will be a tough tournament, but at the same time I look forward to it if I am ready, both physically and mentally", said the 24-year-old, who won the US Open last year.
