Already after 22 minutes and at a disadvantage of 0–5, Sinner threw in the towel and gave up the final against the world's second, Carlos Alcaraz, in Cincinnati Open on Monday evening. Exactly why Sinner could not continue to play is unclear, but it has been reported that it was due to illness.
On Sunday, the singles tournament starts in the US Open, but already on Tuesday, it was planned that Sinner would play with the Czech Katerina Siniakova in mixed doubles in the Grand Slam tournament in New York.
But shortly before the pair's match, the message came that they will not participate.
The duo will be replaced by another mixed doubles team.
Sinner himself spoke out after Monday's interrupted final:
"I am ready to fight. Now I will rest for a couple of days, then it's back to training again and hopefully we are ready then", he said without mentioning the mixed doubles tournament which this year is decided in a new format.
"The US Open will be a tough tournament, but at the same time I look forward to it if I am ready, both physically and mentally”, said the 24-year-old, who won the US Open last year.
