Israel claims that two military targets were attacked in Lebanon, which according to the Israeli military contained weapons belonging to the Shia militia Hezbollah.
The Israeli military (IDF) states in a statement late on Thursday that the targets attacked constituted a breach of the ceasefire agreement.
"IDF continues to operate to remove all threats to the state of Israel and will prevent all attempts by Hezbollah's terrorist organization to rebuild its forces, in accordance with the ceasefire agreements", writes IDF.
It is unclear if anyone was injured in the attacks.
An agreement reached in November brought about a ceasefire between Israel and the Lebanese Shia militia Hezbollah, after two months of war in which Israeli forces advanced into Lebanon.
As part of the agreement, it is up to Lebanon's regular but relatively weak army to deploy forces in the south, where they will maintain peace together with international UN forces.
Hezbollah, in turn, is to withdraw northwards, north of the Litani River and further away from Israel.
This was to take place by January 26 at the latest, but the deadline was extended at a late stage to February 18. There had been a brief escalation since the parties had accused each other of numerous violations and attempts to delay their withdrawals.
Even earlier agreements over the past decades have aimed to establish a buffer zone in southern Lebanon. However, this has not been implemented in practice, largely due to Hezbollah's continued strong influence.
