Thirteen have become eight when the candidates for Radiosporten's Jerring Prize have been scaled down.
Among the five who have been eliminated are several Olympic medalists from the games in Paris last summer. Shooter Victor Lindgren (silver), sailing duo Vilma Bobeck/Rebecka Netzler (silver), and mountain biker Jenny Rissveds (bronze) are all out of the game.
The same applies to Isabelle Haak, generally regarded as one of Europe's top volleyball players, and team Niklas Edin, who became world champions in curling for the seventh time this spring.
This says something about the competition. Swedish sports have had a brilliant 2024, which is reflected in the remaining candidates.
18-year-old Tara Babulfath, for example, took Sweden's first Olympic medal in judo, and Armand Duplantis has continued to dominate the pole vault, with the Olympic gold in Paris on a new world record as the highlight.
Another who has stood out is Truls Möregårdh, who with his two Olympic silvers (single and team) has created table tennis fever in Sweden. Beach volleyball has also received a major boost after David Åhman and Jonatan Hellvig's Olympic gold in front of the Eiffel Tower.
The other nominees have, of course, also had a successful year to look back on: Sarah Sjöström (swimming), Tove Alexandersson (orienteering), Ludvig Åberg (golf), and the men's relay team in biathlon.
The Jerring Prize is awarded annually for the past year's best sports achievement. It is the Swedish people who vote for the winner, which will be presented at the Sports Gala on January 20.
