The County Administrative Board wants Heidelberg Materials to be denied its application for a 30-year stone quarrying permit on northern Gotland, the Board writes in its statement to the Land and Environment Court.

The County Administrative Board believes that the potential damage to groundwater and the natural environment risks becoming too great.

Alternatively, the County Administrative Board wants Heidelberg Materials to be granted permission to quarry stone on northern Gotland only under certain specific conditions, the authority writes in its statement.

Heidelberg Materials, which operates the large cement factory in Slite, is seeking permission to quarry a maximum of 114 million tonnes of stone, divided into 3.8 million tonnes per year over a period of 30 years.
