The speed skater Nils van der Poel won double Olympic gold in Beijing 2022 on 5,000 and 10,000 meters. On both distances, he also holds the world record.

Shortly after his successes, he chose to completely quit speed skating. Since then, he has worked as a lecturer and run a company focused on promoting young Swedish athletes.

Now, van der Poel is taking another step away from celebrity and into anonymity. Since November, he has been known as Nils Svensson, reports Expressen. The change was made on November 22 at the Tax Authority.

Svensson is his mother's maiden name.

Svensson (van der Poel) has not wanted to comment on the name change to the newspaper.
