Top 48 out of 61 players get to continue playing on the LIV tour next year. The rest are eliminated. Stenson is currently ranked 47th.

The 49-year-old has a shared twelfth place as the best result on the tour's eleven tournaments this season. Two tournaments remain.

Playing a whole season and being and fighting in the bottom layer. It's not quite where you want to be. It's time to take care of things.

There was a big controversy when Stenson three years ago left the PGA tour for play on the Saudi-financed LIV tour. Sweden's only male major winner then lost the role as captain for Europe's team in the prestigious competition Ryder Cup.

Stenson himself has said that he chose the LIV tour partly because of the money. The Times reported that the Swede received half a billion kronor just to start on the tour.
