Region Västerbotten reports itself to the Lex Maria authorities after discovering a brain tumor late. If a patient had received continued checks, healthcare could have detected the relapse of the brain tumor earlier, writes Region Västerbotten in a press release.
The person had previously undergone surgery for a brain tumor in 2009, but the analyses from the operation could not provide a secure diagnosis. For several years, the patient was followed up with checks, but after an MRI examination, healthcare chose to discontinue the checks – on insufficient grounds.
Several years later, the patient had an epileptic seizure, and then a extensive tumor was discovered. The patient underwent surgery and still needs complementary treatment for the tumor.
If healthcare had instead continued with regular checks, the tumor growth could have been detected earlier, and healthcare could have initiated earlier treatment with a better prognosis.
