A man in his 60s in Haparanda who hit his partner in the head with a hammer has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for attempted murder.
The incident occurred in July at the couple's home. The police were alerted after the man told a neighbor that he had killed his partner.
The woman was found alive, but severely injured. She survived the assault but has, according to the judge, suffered severe head injuries after being struck at least nine times with the hammer, reports SVT Norrbotten.
The long prison sentence is motivated by the fact that the act is as close to completed murder as possible. The woman had no chance of escaping the attack, according to the district court. It is also a case of recidivism for the man, who has previously been convicted of serious violent crimes, writes NSD.
