Ilkay Gündogan has played his last national team match. The German captain announces that he is quitting the national team.
"After thinking about it for a few weeks, I have come to the conclusion that it is time to end my national team career", he says in a statement.
The 33-year-old continues:
"I look back with great pride on my 82 national team matches for my home country. A figure that I could not have dreamed of when I made my debut for the senior national team in 2011."
Gündogan was team captain for the German national team that reached the quarterfinals in this summer's European Championship in Germany.
