Maysa Sabreen has been appointed as the acting head of the Central Bank of Syria, reports AFP.
She will take office on Tuesday. It is the first time in Syria's history that a woman has been appointed to the post.
It is unclear how long Sabreen is expected to lead the central bank. The previous head, Mohammed Issam Hazime, was appointed in 2021 under the now-deposed dictator Bashar al-Assad's rule.
Syria's economy is in free fall after years of conflict and dictatorship. Since the start of the civil war in 2011, the Syrian currency has lost around 90 percent of its value.
