It was Israel's Defense Minister Israel Katz who first announced that it was a father and his son's bodies that had been recovered in an operation.
Later, the military stated in a statement that they had only recovered the father's body, but that they had found findings linked to the son during the operation, "which raises serious concern for his life".
The father was found in a tunnel in Rafah, according to the military.
The two men were taken hostage during a terrorist-stamped Hamas attack on October 7, 2023.
The return of the body takes place while Israel and Hamas are considering an agreement on a ceasefire, where the remaining hostages would be released and which would lead to a pause in the fighting in Gaza.
Around 100 people are still being held captive in Gaza. A third of them are believed to be dead, according to Israel. The man who has now been recovered was, however, believed to be among the living.
