According to the study, every fourth person on earth lacks secure access to drinking water. The consequences are dire – without water, not only people's health deteriorates. Other circumstances in life, such as the level of education and the risk of getting stuck in poverty, are direct consequences.
”When children lack access to safe water and hygiene, their health, education, and future are jeopardized, especially girls are affected. At this rate, the promise of drinking water and sanitation for every child is increasingly out of reach”, writes the head of the UN children's organization's water program.
The UN has a goal that all people on earth should have secure access to drinking water by 2030.
”Water, sanitation, and hygiene are fundamental human rights. We must increase the pace of work ahead, especially for the most marginalized groups”, writes the World Health Organization's environmental chief Ruediger Krech in a comment.
