The message is that there is no accountability and the USA will not lift a finger to stop them.
Hedenskog, an analyst at the Center for Eastern European Studies at the Foreign Policy Institute (UI), describes the Trump administration's view on conflict resolution, linked to control over strategic resources, as "some kind of 19th-century imperialism". He mentions the so-called mineral agreement, which is referred to in the USA's draft peace treaty.
That countries take over natural resources from other countries and colonize, without it bringing any benefit to the country that has the resources.
"Completely absurd"
The USA's President Trump's proposal is to "freeze" the conflict along current front lines, so that Ukraine loses the parts of the country that Russia has conquered.
Hedenskog sees it as a pure "capitulation agreement" for Ukraine's part, which also contains sheer absurdities. For example, that the USA would take over the operation of the reactors in Zaporizhzhya, Europe's largest nuclear power plant.
Completely absurd. It's on Russian-occupied territory. And it goes against the agreement point that Russia should have de facto control over occupied areas. Moreover, according to the Ukrainian constitution, nuclear power plants in Ukraine should be owned and operated by the Ukrainian state.
Ominous
The plan is also seen as a way for the USA to pass the buck. Trump presents "a deal" that his Ukrainian colleague Volodymyr Zelenskyj, and Europe, cannot say yes to.
And then the USA can leave and say: "Now we've done everything we can and it's their fault, they're stupid, and now we have other things to attend to".
Then it will be Ukraine and the EU who will be blamed for this.
For Europe, the development is ominous not just specifically in Ukraine. The Russian regime would certainly be pleased with such an agreement – but only for the time being.
It doesn't satisfy Russia in any way. This will only spur Russia to continue with its imperialist claims, both in Ukraine and potentially also in other countries.
