The average temperature during the heatwave between August 3 and 18 was 4.6 degrees warmer than the median temperature. The previous record, from July 2022, was 4.5 degrees above the median temperature.
According to the Spanish meteorological institute AEMET, the period between August 8 and 17 was the warmest ten-day period measured in the country in at least 75 years.
Over 1,100 deaths are attributed to the heatwave, according to a compilation by the national health institute. The figure was almost as high in July, which corresponded to a 50 percent increase compared to the same month last year.
Spain has been plagued by wildfires during the summer, which have ravaged over 400,000 hectares of land, also a new record. At least four people have been killed and thousands have been forced to leave their homes.
On Saturday, Spain's authority for civil protection and disasters announced that they had almost defeated the wildfires.
