The tractor trailer was transporting over 60 people who were on their way to the state of Rajasthan for a pilgrimage, reports the newspaper The Hindu.
Both among the deceased and the injured there are children. The truck driver fled the scene of the accident, according to local police.
Traffic incidents with many fatalities occur relatively often in densely populated India, which is often explained by inadequate roads, aged vehicles and drivers who do not follow traffic rules.
The risk is particularly high in connection with pilgrimages and other large religious gatherings, when large numbers of people fill the roads. In late July, 18 pilgrims were killed in eastern India when the bus they were traveling in collided with a truck.
