According to the Trump-critical governor, there is no state of emergency that would motivate the deployment of the national guard to the country's third largest city. Pritzker adds that Trump "is trying to create a crisis", reports BBC.
Chicago's mayor Brandon Johnson states that he has not received any information about the deployment since Trump announced the plans on Friday, which also apply to New York. Johnson calls the plans "illegal" and warns that they can "fuel the tensions between the city's inhabitants and the law enforcement", and threaten the progress the city has made in its crime fighting.
Trump has previously declared a "state of emergency" in Washington DC where 2,000 from the national guard have been deployed. The national guards were deployed in the capital on August 12 to, according to Trump, save the city from "crime and bloodshed".
Both in Washington DC and Chicago, the crime rate is higher than the average in the USA, but the trend is downward.
All of the cities specifically pointed out by Trump have democratic governments.
