An Argentine tourist was shot in the head and chest after he accidentally drove into a slum area in Rio de Janeiro.

The tourist, who is in his 50s, was taken to a hospital where he is being treated for serious injuries, according to Brazilian rescue workers.

He was driving with his wife and daughter through Morro dos Prazeres, a stronghold of the criminal gang Comando Vermelho, when he was attacked, according to the police. After the shooting, the car crashed into a wall.

At the time, the family is said to have been following a GPS route description to get to the Christ statue.
