Hungary and Viktor Orbán stand firmly by that Ukraine should not be allowed to become a member of the EU.
Perhaps Orbán's friendship with the President of the USA may make him change his mind? At least that is what the European leaders who discussed Ukraine in the White House on Monday hope.
This is reported by Bloomberg, which states that the leaders asked Trump to use his influence on Orbán to put pressure on him in the matter.
One of Ukraine's long-awaited EU memberships could provide the country with more security, is the reasoning – but Orbán dismisses it.
He himself wrote on Tuesday on Facebook that "Ukraine's membership in the EU provides no security guarantees. Linking membership to security guarantees is unnecessary and dangerous”.
Trump and Orbán are said to have spoken during the night to Tuesday, and Orbán is also said to have expressed interest in hosting a meeting between Trump, Volodymyr Zelenskyj and Vladimir Putin.
Budapest has not confirmed the conversation, the White House has declined to comment on the information about the Hungarian capital as a possible host for a summit.
For Ukraine, the EU negotiations are seen as part of the discussion on security guarantees that is being conducted within the framework of the peace talks that the USA hopes to initiate with Russia.
