The daily press conference at the White House got extra actuality on Tuesday evening after Monday's summit with European leaders who supported visiting Volodymyr Zelenskyj.
Trump's press secretary Leavitt confirmed again that Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin had spoken on the phone during Monday evening, and that Putin "agreed to initiate the next phase" in a process about Ukraine's future.
According to Leavitt, the proposal that Putin and Zelenskyj would meet one on one – without Trump's presence – came up at the meeting at the White House on Monday. All present leaders agreed that a meeting between Zelenskyj and Putin would be a step forward. Leavitt then said that "the president expects it to happen".
Trump also said to Fox News earlier on Tuesday that he "has arranged" a bilateral meeting between Putin and Zelenskyj.
The Kremlin has not officially confirmed plans for a meeting between Zelenskyj and Putin. No location for a possible meeting has been determined, and Leavitt did not want to speculate about possible meeting places at the press conference. She did not want to confirm that President Putin had suggested that Zelenskyj should travel to Moscow.
