The American department store chain Walmart is recalling frozen shrimp, and warns that they may be radioactive, although in minimal doses. This after they have been exposed to radioactive contamination.
The shrimp, frozen with breadcrumbs, are imported from Indonesia and are said to have been exposed to low doses of cesium-137 before reaching the USA.
The Food and Drug Administration, FDA, states that the shrimp may pose "potential health concerns" for people exposed to low doses of cesium-137 over a longer period.
However, the level of the radioactive isotope detected is reportedly far lower than what the FDA considers to be directly hazardous to health.
