An Italian man has been arrested by Swiss police, suspected of leading a league that smuggled seven tons of gold into Switzerland.
For five years, gold jewelry, coins, and gold bars have been driven across the border – with the gold hidden in secret compartments behind the car's dashboard or in the upholstery of the car seats. Some of the gold has been forwarded to Germany.
The 65-year-old suspect forged certificates to deceive jewelers in Switzerland about the origin of the gold.
According to Swiss police, the country's treasury has been cheated out of 25 million Swiss francs – approximately 300 million kronor – in taxes and fees, reports Swissinfo.
