He is going to Russia, believe it or not, Trump replied to a question about Witkoff's upcoming plans, during a question period at the White House, reports CNN.
Witkoff is currently in Israel and will visit Gaza on Friday. His latest known visit to Russia took place in April when he met the country's president Vladimir Putin, but those talks did not bring about a breakthrough to put an end to the war in Ukraine.
During the same question period, Trump described the latest Russian attacks on Kyiv as "heinous".
He also confirmed that he plans to impose new sanctions on Russia – something he had previously threatened with if Russia does not agree to a peace agreement by next week – but at the same time toned down what effects they can have on the course of the war or Putin's attitude.
I do not know if sanctions bother him. You know, they are familiar with sanctions. I know better than anyone about sanctions and tariffs and everything else. I do not know if it will have any effect, but we are doing it, says Trump.
