The city of Triel-sur-Seine, which is located a few miles outside Paris, is one of the French cities that has introduced a curfew. There, it is now prohibited for people under 18 years to be out between 11 pm and 5 am. The decision to introduce the ban came after a series of incidents of vandalism and theft around the city.

"It has become very quiet", says the city's mayor Cedric Aoun to AFP.

In the city of Nimes in southern France, a temporary nightly curfew has been introduced for children under 16, after a wave of violence linked to drug trafficking has affected the city. Similar bans have also been introduced in the city of Bezier and the suburbs of Saint-Ouen-sur-Seine and Villecresnes outside Paris.

In the port city of Marseille, it was prohibited last summer for children under 13 to be out at night, but the city has not reintroduced the rule this year, as they say it was difficult to assess what effect it had on crime.

The measure has been received with mixed reactions. Several parents tell AFP that they appreciate the ban, but the French human rights organization Ligue des droits de l'homme has taken legal action against the ban in Triel-sur-Seine.
