Slovenia will be the first EU country to ban the import, export and transport of arms to and from Israel.
In a statement, the government writes that they have acted independently in this matter as the EU "could not take concrete measures" as they had requested. They also write that the country has not issued any permits for the export of military arms and equipment to Israel since October 2023 due to the conflict.
The Slovenian government has often criticized Israel and the country's Prime Minister Robert Golob has long pushed for a pause in the EU's trade agreement with Israel. He has also been clear that his own country is willing to do so on its own if the union cannot agree on tougher measures.
Earlier in July, Slovenia also became the first country within the EU to ban Israel's far-right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and the ultra-nationalist Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir.
