The reason is an ongoing corruption investigation into past business dealings and strong political pressure, reports the public service company LRT.

Paluckas' message comes after financial crime investigators made a raid on a company owned by Paluckas' sister-in-law. The company has received EU funds and has used them to do business with a company that is partly owned by the prime minister.

President Gitanas Nauseda says on Thursday that he welcomes Paluckas' decision.
