Stinky – Moominvalley's nasty villain – is removed from an exhibition in New York, reports Hufvudstadsbladet.

The decision was made after a patron of the Brooklyn Public Library, where the exhibition "Tove Jansson and the Moomins: The door is always open" is on display, notified that Stinky can be perceived as a racist symbol.

This was a curatorial decision to create an environment where all visitors feel welcome and listened to, says the library's press spokesperson Fritzi Bodenheimer to HBL.

Why Stinky can be perceived as racist is not clear. Bodenheimer emphasizes, however, that there is no evidence, comments or scientific studies that suggest it, writes HBL.

The exhibition is the first in the USA dedicated to Tove Jansson.
