The state of emergency is being abolished today so that the country can hold elections on the way to multiparty democracy, says the junta's spokesperson Zaw Min Tun in a voice message.

The election is intended to be held in December, but will be boycotted by opposition groups and criticized in advance by international observers.

Since the military coup in 2021, dissidents have been cracked down on hard and extensive fighting has been going on between the criticized military and armed resistance groups. Thousands of people have been killed and tens of thousands have been arrested.
