USA's president Donald Trump wants the White House to become more luxurious. A large banquet hall is to start being built this year.

The news about the construction plans was presented by the White House on Thursday.

The new ballroom will be more than 8,300 square meters in size and have room for 650 seated guests. And it will be a significant change compared to the venue used today which has room for 200 people.

The new ballroom will be built where the small, heavily rebuilt and renovated eastern wing is located today, says the White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt at a press conference.

In recent weeks, Trump has had a number of meetings with, among others, the White House staff and the Secret Service to discuss the construction plans.

The price tag is estimated to be around 200 million dollars, equivalent to nearly two billion kronor. Trump and a number of donors will pay for the costs.

The work will begin in September this year and the goal is for the work to be completed well in time before Trump's term of office is over.
