The basketball star, who has a total of 212 million followers on X and Instagram, announced his decision after sharing a post by Rich Kleiman, long-time agent to NBA profile Kevin Durant, late on Wednesday evening. In the post, Kleiman directs criticism at the negative tone that he believes pervades parts of sports coverage in the media.
Shortly after sharing the post, the 39-year-old Los Angeles Lakers player followed up with a post of his own, announcing his pause:
"Taking a break from social media for now. Take care of yourselves".
The move comes after James, who has previously taken similar breaks, attacked users on the internet in an interview after the Lakers' win against Utah earlier in the week, accusing them of claiming he had lied when he said he had been aware of his young teammate Dalton Knacht's talent.
Everyone on the internet is always saying that I'm lying. They say I'm lying about everything, said James then.
