After eleven holes, Åberg was on par. Thereafter, the Swede found the sting between holes 12 and 14 with three straight birdies. After the first round, Åberg is in a shared twelfth place in good company with world number one Scottie Scheffler.
Åberg is five strokes behind the leading American Akshay Bhatia, who tops the leaderboard at eight under par.
The 70 highest ranked get to play in this week's competition. The top 50 then advance to the next competition in Baltimore.
Thereafter, the top 30 get to play the final in Atlanta, which is played between August 21-24.
Prior to the playoffs, Åberg was in 14th place in the ranking.
The ultimate winner of the tour final is expected to receive just over 96 million kronor (10 million dollars) in prize money, according to CBS Sports.
