Shortly before midnight, there is a dead heat between the red-green parties and the blue-yellow parties in both SVT's forecast and the vote count itself.
Even though the question of the government is uncertain, there is one party that has reason to celebrate. The Liberals appear to have cleared the parliamentary threshold with flying colours.
It seems so. Of course, it is the votes of support that carry the party over the threshold and this will have consequences for the party's future in any negotiations about seats and programmes, says Tommy Möller.
It is the Moderates who have released the most votes to L, followed by SD, according to Möller.
"Taking that into account, the Moderates have made a pretty good choice," he says.
Shockwave in SD?
The Moderates look set to take back their place as the largest opposition party as the Sweden Democrats appear to be backing down.
It was unexpected and it was a very big decline. We haven't seen that in previous polls. It's probably a shock wave going through the Sweden Democrats right now. They hadn't expected that.
On the red-green side, V, C and MP are close to each other.
"It is very important for the Left Party to be the largest party after the Social Democrats in that constellation. It gives them a good negotiating position," says Tommy Möller.
Worst choice in modern times
The Social Democrats are facing their worst election result in modern times and are also retreating in the usually red districts of Norrland.
It will be exciting to see how it is handled. If you are allowed to form a government, I think there will be fewer problems, but in a post-election analysis there are probably many things that can be twisted and turned. It is a long-term, fairly clear decline seen over time with a notch in that curve in the last election, says Tommy Möller.
According to the political science professor, the S votes have gone to several different parties.
They have probably lost a lot of votes within their government alternative. Left-wing Social Democrats who vote for the Left Party to get a clear left-wing character, and then we have the right-wing phalanx within the party who may have chosen to tactically vote for the Centre Party.
