Victoria Mboko Wins First WTA Title at Canadian Open

18-year-old Victoria Mboko sensationally made her way all the way to the final. There she defeated the superstar Naomi Osaka and took home the Canadian Open in Montréal in front of a jubilant home crowd. It has been an incredible week, says the Canadian.

Mboko participated in the tournament as a so-called wild card player and started the year ranked 333rd in the world. Now the 18-year-old has taken home her first WTA title.

When I had that winning moment and saw so many people stand up and cheer for me, it was a surreal experience, said Mboko in the victory interview.

The winning figures were written to 2–1 in sets (2–6, 6–4, 6–1).

On the way to the title, Mboko knocked out four former Grand Slam winners: Sofia Kenin, Elena Rybakina, Coco Gauff, and finally Naomi Osaka.

– Montréal, I love you, said a touched Mboko after the victory.

With the victory, Mboko also takes a giant leap on the world ranking. From 85th place to 24.
