Belarus president Aleksandr Lukasjenko says that he does not plan to stand in the next election.
At the same time, the president is somewhat cryptic in his statement.
No, I am not planning anything now, I am not planning anything. The only thing I can allow myself, and I have not said it out loud either, is: listen, Trump is soon 80 and he looks good, he says in an interview published on the state-controlled Belarusian news agency Belta.
The latest presidential elections in Belarus have been condemned by the outside world as rigged in Lukasjenko's favor. The next election is not expected until 2030.
The 70-year-old president is one of Russian leader Vladimir Putin's closest allies and has ruled Belarus increasingly authoritatively since 1994. He was re-elected as recently as January, but even that election has been widely condemned as unfair.
