Hammarby Faces Tough Dual Challenges in Damallsvenskan and Champions League

Hammarby's double challenges in the autumn: Gold struggle in Damallsvenskan and Champions League games. It's tough because there are many matches, and we don't have extremely large squads in the Swedish league, says national team star Ellen Wangerheim.

Ellen Wangerheim made her championship debut in the European Championship in Switzerland this summer. Two substitute appearances were the forward's result.

The 20-year-old is prepared for the extra attention that comes with being a national team player.

I want younger girls and boys to look up to us as football players, it's one of my goals in my career. The fact that you have more eyes on you just means that you always have to be at the top, says Wangerheim.

Damallsvenskan back

Now she is turning her attention to Damallsvenskan, where Hammarby is in the battle for the SM gold.

Of course we're going for it. We've won one of the two titles you can win this year and obviously want to go for the double, and at the same time perform in Europe, says Wangerheim.

Hammarby begins the Champions League qualifying in late August against Ukrainian Metalist. Mustering teams on two fronts will be tough, Wangerheim believes.

It's tough because there are a lot of matches, and we don't have huge squads in the Swedish league. But at the same time, we (Hammarby) have a very good squad, I think. Everyone can play and everyone can start, and that makes it a breadth in the group, she says.

Unstable away game

But if there is to be another title, the away game needs to be improved, thinks Hammarby's goal queen.

That's where we've been a bit unstable. We had a goal before this season to be up and win against these top teams that we didn't win against last year. I think we've done that now in the spring, so just to continue with that in the fall and we'll be up there and fight for the gold, says Wangerheim.

But it feels good, it feels like the girls have trained well here during the summer, and it feels like we have a good atmosphere in the group and good quality in the training.

This Friday's restart sees second-placed Hammarby take on bottom team Alingsås.
