With over 500 matches in the German top division and 19 international matches for West Germany, Immel is one of the biggest icons in German football.

Now the 64-year-old will have to serve a two-year and two-month prison sentence after cheating several victims out of a total of around 350,000 kronor, according to Bild.

Immel is extremely ashamed to be here (in the courtroom). He has financial problems, which have been known to the public for a long time, says his lawyer and continues:

He is not a professional swindler, he is a former football player who has failed.

Immel has two World Championship silver medals on his record – 1982 and 1986.

It is not yet known whether Immel will appeal the verdict.
