The EU Commission has already previously promised that answers will come if new punitive tariffs are introduced by President Donald Trump and his government in Washington.

The same words are now heard again.

The EU believes that we should work together instead of working against each other. We are ready to cooperate with you if you play by the rules. But we will also protect our consumers and companies in every situation. They expect it from us and they deserve it, emphasizes the EU Commission's spokesperson on trade issues, Olof Gill, at a press briefing in Brussels.

He simultaneously rejects Trump's view that the EU was created to "mess with the USA".

We believe that the EU has been a boost for the USA since its creation, says Gill in Brussels.
