Trump writes on his social media platform Truth Social that "words are very important and can often lead to unintentional consequences", and continues:
"I hope this does not become one of these cases".
What he is focusing on is "foolish and provocative statements" by Dmitrij Medvedev, vice chairman of the national Russian security council and the country's former president.
On Monday, Trump said he is disappointed with Russia and that he is reducing the deadline for the country to agree on a peace settlement with Ukraine from 50 to 10-12 days, otherwise further American sanctions await.
Medvedev then responded in a post on X that Trump is playing the "ultimatum game" with Russia and continued with an ominous phrase:
"Every new ultimatum is a threat and a step towards war. Not between Russia and Ukraine, but with (Trump's) own country".
Jan Hallenberg thinks the spiral of threats is unfortunate.
Nuclear placements and nuclear-carrying weapon systems should not be moved unnecessarily, it can be handled in other ways, he says to DN.
