The Team Captain's Nightmare - Injured against Slovakia

Victor Nilsson Lindelöf slammed his palms into the grass on the Strawberry arena in frustration, time and time again. Then he ripped off the captain's armband and left the pitch. The centre-back's comeback to the starting eleven only lasted for barely 25 minutes.

With a heavily bandaged left thigh, he was supported by the national team's medical team as he made his way to the locker room.

As he approached the Swedish dugout, he received a warm hug from national team captain Jon Dahl Tomasson.

How badly the 30-year-old is injured remains to be seen, but his reactions suggested that he is likely to face a new, long period of absence, yet another one for the injury-prone defender.

Nilsson Lindelöf was part of the national team squad already in October, but then he had to settle for a 30-minute-long substitute appearance against Slovakia in Bratislava. He didn't play at all a few days later against Estonia.

Before tonight's group final against Slovakia, Tomasson told the association's website:

"I'm glad to see Victor back in form. He has played a part in Manchester United now and is in a good place now. It's important that we get to take advantage of his leadership."

Carl Starfelt took Nilsson Lindelöf's place to the right in the Swedish three-man defense.

Isak Hien was warned early in the match and is suspended against Azerbaijan on Tuesday.

The match is ongoing. Sweden leads 2–1 midway through the second half.
