One of the dead is a local Hamas leader who was shot dead during an exchange of fire, according to Israel. Palestinian health authorities have identified the man whose body was taken into custody by Israeli forces.
An additional body of a dead man in his 20s has been handed over to the Palestinian Red Cross, and a third man was confirmed dead upon arrival at the hospital in Jenin.
In addition to the three who were killed, three more Palestinians have been arrested.
Operation "Iron Wall"
The "Iron Wall" offensive on the West Bank is in its 43rd day and is said to combat terrorism. It began only a few days after the ceasefire came into effect in Gaza. Israel has conducted raids into several refugee camps near Jenin, Tulkarem, and Tubas, which are seen as strongholds for militant Palestinians.
Refugee camps on the West Bank have been emptied of tens of thousands of inhabitants, and Israel has announced that they will not be allowed to return. Tanks have been deployed in the operation.
The big question is how much is done out of military necessity and how much is done for political reasons, said Anders Persson at Linnaeus University, an expert on the conflict in the Middle East, in an earlier comment to TT.
UN: Stop the escalation
Over 40,000 Palestinians have been displaced in the past month, the largest displacement of people from the West Bank in recent decades.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres is urging Israel to immediately reduce the escalation on the West Bank.
The attacks and the increasing violence must stop. Israel as an occupying power must comply with all its commitments under international law, including humanitarian law, says Guterres, adding that the Palestinian authority must be supported.
