The Ukrainian was arrested this week near Brindisi in southern Italy at the request of German authorities. He is alleged to have been part of a group that, according to German prosecutors, placed explosive devices on the Nord Stream 1 and 2 gas pipelines in September 2022.

According to DR, which has taken part of the German arrest warrant against the man, at least four timed explosive charges were used, each with a weight of between 14 and 27 kilograms and consisting of a mixture of the powerful military explosives hexogen and octogen.

The man is believed to have had a coordinating role and is suspected of, among other things, constitutionally hostile sabotage and destruction of facilities.

According to the investigators' timeline, the group is believed to have left a German port on a rented sailboat no later than September 8 and returned no later than September 22, 2022, after which the suspected man is believed to have been driven by car to Ukraine. The first explosion was not registered until four days later.

Investigations have previously been initiated and closed in both Sweden and Denmark.
